ACCUSED KILLER CONVICTED
A Jefferson County Jury Friday afternoon, convicted 20-year old Lakendall Sims of capital murder in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year old woman. Sims was charged with killing Mary Catherine Williams in 2007. It took the jury only 90 minutes to reach a guilty verdict. Jurors are to return to a Bessemer Cutoff courtroom Saturday morning at 9 o'clock to begin the sentencing phase.
Sims faces the death penalty or life behind bars, without parole.
Sims is also accused in the murder of Gabriel Alaniz, along with the home invasion and brutal beatings of an elderly Lipscomb couple. But he is most widely known for assaulting a Jefferson County bailiff last September, taking his uniform and gun, and simply walking out of the courthouse. He later carjacked a van and fled to the city of Lipscomb where he eluded authorities for some 24 hours. Sims eventually surrendered without incident.
In addition to the murder charges, Sims is also charged with assault, robbery, burglary, theft and escape.
