SHOOTING IN PELHAM

All lanes of I-65 North and Southbound between exits 242 and 243 have been reopened following an investigation into the fatal shooting of a Pelham police officer early this morning.

Authorities say the unidentified officer was shot and wounded while on a routine traffic stop.

He was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he later died.

A multi unit task force followed leads on a suspect to the Inglenook Community in Birmingham and then to Highway 31, where he was apprehended.

One person described as a white male has been arrested, another is being held for questioning.

SPANKING INCIDENT

A second-grade teacher at Barrett Elementary school was placed on unpaid administrative leave in November after she admitted to spanking a child with a belt.

A statement issued by school system spokesman Michaelle Chapman does not provide details about what led to the spanking, which is a violation of school system regulations.

The name of the teacher was not released.
