FOUR STUDENTS KILLED IN HOOVER MOTEL
The names of the four Mississippi University for Women students killed in the Saturday nigh Hoover hotel fire have been released by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
Those killed in the fire were Jamelia C. Brown, 18, of Grenada, Miss,; Jaslynn McGee, 19, of Corinth, Miss.; Alondan Turner, 18, of Cordova; and Catherine Muse, 18 also of Cordova, said Johnny Long, deputy coroner with Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
No other details were released.
VOLUNTEERS FOR KING HOLIDAY
A Birmingham nonprofit group that coordinates service projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day expects as many as 2,000 people to donate their time Monday.
Hands On Birmingham director Candi Williams says participation in the group's annual day of service in honor of the fallen civil rights leader has increased significantly in recent years.
DAY OF CELEBRATION
Thousands of people across the nation are honoring Dr. Martin Luther King birth with a variety of commemorations and celebrations today.
One of the celebrations had over two thousand people at the BJCC this morning for the Annual Unity Breakfast.
Later at 10 o'clock this morning the annual wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Dr. King will be held at Kelly Ingram Park.
Then at 12 noon the annual march and rally from Birmingham City Hall to the 16th Street Baptist Church will be held.
BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT FIGHTS BIRDS
Newly released records show Alabama airport officials reported 715 incidents of birds striking aircraft from 1990 until July 2009.
Federal Aviation Administration data shows about 450 of those were reported by the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport.
